14-year-old girl dies after being hit by dump truck in Burnaby

A tragic scene out of Burnaby where a 14 year old girl has died after being hit by a dump truck. It happened in the area of 11th Avenue and 16th Avenue at around 3:30 pm.

A 14-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a dump truck Thursday afternoon, the Burnaby RCMP says.

Mounties say officers responded to reports of a pedestrian-involved collision near 11th Avenue and 18th Street around 3:20 p.m.

According to the RCMP, the driver of the truck pulling a dump trailer stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police.

“We understand a tragic incident like this will be felt widely throughout the community. Burnaby RCMP is looking at ways to support those impacted by this tragic death. Our Victim Services Unit is also engaged and offering support to those affected,” said. Cpl. Brett Cunningham in a statement.

One neighbour says the area is normally quite busy. He recalls hearing sirens and seeing a number of first responders arrive Thursday.

“Usually around that time, there’s a lot of workers and kids crossing the street. It’s usually pretty busy with big vehicles and trucks and such,” he told CityNews.

The Burnaby RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) is investigating to determine the circumstances of the crash.

Driver impairment is not suspected.

The area was closed off to traffic for several hours. Roads in the neighbourhood have since reopened.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or who may have dash cam video from the area of 11th Avenue between 18th Street and 15th Street from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. are urged to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
