This Coquitlam dog has been waiting nine months to be adopted

Coquitlam’s Animal Shelter is trying to find a senior dog her forever home. The city recently posted a photo of Gemma, an 11-year-old husky, who has been waiting to be adopted for over 280 days.

The City of Coquitlam recently posted about Gemma on social media, in the hopes of finding adoptive owners.

According to the shelter, Gemma stayed in a couple of foster homes over the holidays, but has been back at the shelter since January.

CityNews helped put the word out on Wednesday and her story was shared hundreds of times. On Thursday, the city said despite several calls to the shelter about Gemma, the pup still has not been adopted.

“We’ve seen a couple of people come in to the shelter and more email inquiries, learning about the specific and what would work best for Gemma … Hopefully, this will lead to finding her forever home,” Aaron Hilgerdenaar, Coquitlam’s animal services manager, said.

Hilgerdenaar says Gemma has been at the shelter for a much longer time than most dogs spend at the shelter.

“She has a bit of arthritis but still loves to play! Her ideal home is child and pet-free, and has someone home most of the time as she has separation anxiety,” reads the city’s Facebook post.

The city’s post has been shared more than 900 times, in the hopes of reaching someone who will adopt her.

Gemma is described as “playful and silly.” According to the city’s adoption page, she was adopted from the shelter as a puppy, but since returned to its care.

“We encourage all folks who are interested in Gemma to read her bio … on our adoption page, to make sure that her needs would be a match for your home,” Hilgerdenaar said.

The ideal home for Gemma would be a more rural area, living with quiet adults, without any kids or other pets. If you or someone you know might want to adopt Gemma, reach out to the Coquitlam Animal Shelter.
