A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of B.C. Saturday.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the earthquake hit over 150 km southeast of the Village of Queen Charlotte region on Haida Gwaii.

The rumble was recorded at 4:59 p.m.

“There are no reports of damage, and none would be expected. No tsunami expected,” said Earthquakes Canada.

While a 5.1 earthquake is strong enough to be felt, any quakes between 3.5 and 5.4 rarely cause damage, according to Earthquakes Canada.

“In the offshore region to the west of Vancouver Island, more than 100 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater (large enough to cause damage had they been closer to land) have occurred during the past 70 years,” says a government statement.

According to the Earthquakes Canada site, Canada’s largest earthquake, registered at 8.1, occurred on August 22, 1949, west of Haida Gwaii.
