One person has been arrested after a rescue vehicle belonging to the Surrey Fire Service was stolen on Wednesday and driven all the way to Abbotsford.
Surrey RCMP say the small truck was stolen at around noon from the area of 105 Avenue and 140 Street in Whalley, where crews were responding to a call.
“Surrey Rescue (was) dispatched to a burning complaint around 11:40 a.m.,” said Greg McRobbie, assistant chief of operations, Surrey Fire Rescue.
“When they got out, they investigated the complaint and an unknown person took unauthorized control of (the vehicle) and we reported this to RCMP.”
The driver took the truck on a joyride, police say, all the way to Abbotsford.
The vehicle was later reported in the ditch on Highway 1 east of Clearbrook. Mounties say the truck’s tire was blown.
With the help of Abbotsford police, the driver was taken into custody without incident. Witnesses told CityNews dozens of police cruisers were at the scene.
No one was hurt. There’s no word yet on charges.
