Images of suspect in ‘completely random’ Vancouver machete attack released

Vancouver police have shared images of a man believed to have slashed two people with a machete on the Downtown Eastside last month.

It happened on Sunday, June 19, near the Empress Hotel in the area of Main and Hastings streets. Police say a 49-year-old man and 38-year-old woman were approached from behind and allegedly slashed while loading their luggage into a cab.

Both were hospitalized with head and neck wounds, but are expected to be okay.

Const. Tania Visintin says they still don’t know if there was a motive for this attack.

“Investigators believe it was completely random and unprovoked,” she said.

The victims didn’t know the attacker, police said last month, noting the man ran off after the attack.

Police say they received surveillance video from nearby businesses this week, which show the suspect.

“Given the time of day and the location of this incident, we believe there were witnesses who have not yet come forward. We also believe that people will recognize the suspect and can help us identify him.”

The suspect is described as in his 40s and about 5’10 tall. He was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, grey pants, and black sneakers. He was carrying an umbrella.
