Charges laid in Vancouver crash that claimed the life of a toddler

A man is facing charges in connection to the tragic death of a little girl in Downtown Vancouver last year.

A 23-month old child, who was identified as Ocean, was killed after she and her father were struck by a vehicle that had gone up onto the curb on July 6, 2021 near the courthouse.

The child was being carried by her father at the time near Smithe and Hornby Streets and she died at the scene.

The 31-year-old dad suffered non-lifethreatening injuries.

Police say the black Ford Escape collided with a black McLaren in the intersection, and the suv then ran into the pair on the sidewalk.

The Vancouver Police Department announced two charges have been laid against 30-year-old Seyed Moshfeghi Zadeh. Police confirmed he was driving the Ford Escape.

The North Vancouver man is facing one count of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and one count of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm.

An online fundraiser for the child’s family was started in the days following the tragedy.

“Ocean, I wish that I could have met you in a different circumstance,” reads one comment, written by a person whose name matches that of a VPD member. “You will be in my heart and memory forever. I promise you that my team and I will do everything that we can to ensure this injustice never happens again. Rest in peace. Till we meet again.”

Another person wrote that Ocean was an “amazing little girl, inquisitive, sweet-natured, and had the most beautiful smile that lit up the neighbourhood.”
