Longtime New West councillor Chuck Puchmayr running for mayor

Another big name has entered New Westminster’s mayoral race. Veteran councillor Chuck Puchmayr has announced his bid for job in the Oct. 15 election.

Puchmayr has lived in New Westminster since 1978 and was first elected to council in 1996. He stayed in that role until 2005, when he became the NDP MLA for New Westminster, serving as the opposition labour critic.

He did not run again in 2009 and returned to civic politics in 2011. In the upcoming election, he will be running as an independent for the mayor’s seat.

“New Westminster is heading into a critical phase of growth which is challenged by strong inflationary pressures. Residents and businesses deserve sensible, non-partisan leadership with a strong focus on community safety and affordability,” Puchmayr states on his website.

Puchmayr is the third candidate to enter the race.

Ken Armstrong was the first to declare his candidacy in February, running for the New West Progressives. Meanwhile, two-term councillor Patrick Johnstone is running on the Community First slate. He announced his bid back in May.
