Heat warning in effect, cooling centres open across Lower Mainland

The temperature is rising across the Lower Mainland, as the mercury hits the mid-30s.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, and says temperatures could get up to 35 C degrees.

CityNews meteorologist Carl Lam says the hottest time of the day is expected to be Wednesday afternoon and early evening.

“We have temperatures today well above average. The guaranteed high out at YVR is 27 degrees, but areas further inland are getting into the low 30s today and even warmer for tomorrow with temperatures getting up to about 29 down by the shoreline, and the mid-30s are possible for areas further inland tomorrow.

Lam says it is a very brief but hot stretch of weather right across the province, as the average temperature for this time of year is 22 C degrees.

“We’re going to sail right past that today and tomorrow. That’s why we have those heat warnings in place. And also for areas further inland, we’re going to have really hot and dry but also some sticky conditions out there,” Lam explained.

Cooling centres across the Lower Mainland have been opened for folks seeking reprieve from the heat. There are city facilities open, many with extended hours, offering you locations to beat the heat.

CityNews has compiled cooling centre locations across the region. You can find them here.
