‘Prolific offender’ arrested after crashing into residence: Abbotsford police

Police in Abbotsford say a man they call a “prolific offender ” has been arrested after allegedly crashing into an occupied home early Friday.

They say it happened at around 4:23 a.m. when officers located a vehicle towing a stolen trailer along Highway 11 and Hallert Road.

The trailer had been stolen minutes earlier from the Mission area and was full of ATVs and a dirt bike.

Officers say the driver was driving along the streets of Abbotsford, and they followed and tried to set up a spike belt to stop him.

Police say the driver tried to avoid the spikes and drove off the road, lost control, and crashed into a home near Clearbrook Road and Charlotte Ave.

They add no one inside the home was hurt.

Officers arrested 39-year-old John Szanto and charge him with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, theft over $5,000, and breach of release order.

“Prolific offenders such as Mr.Szanto continue to impact our communities, putting public safety at risk. These offenders demonstrate time and time again that they have no respect for our justice system as well as their court-ordered condition,” said S Sgt. Mark Jordan.
