Metro Vancouver gas prices hover in record high territory

Just when you hoped it couldn’t go much higher, there has been another big spike in the price of gas at the pump in Metro Vancouver.

Drivers who need to fill up Monday face a near record high for a litre of regular gas for the region — $2.339 at many stations — after another 13-cent spike for a litre of regular overnight.

That is only three cents shy of the all-time high of $2.369 per litre set in June.

Add that to the roughly 27-cent run-up Metro Vancouver saw last week, the price of regular is around 40 cents more than it was just a few days ago.

If you have an average vehicle with a gas tank somewhere between 45 and 65 litres capacity, you’re now paying $18 to $20 more for a fill-up compared to this time last week

The head petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com says one of the longest gas price declines on record has finally come to an end after over a dozen weeks, blaming a “myriad [of] refinery issues” across the country.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a wider gamut of price behaviours coast-to-coast in my career,” Patrick DeHaan told CityNews.

“A slew of unexpected refinery disruptions, including fires and routine maintenance, have seemingly all happened in a short span of time, causing wholesale gas prices to spike in areas of the West Coast, Great Lakes and Prairies, and some of those areas could see prices spike another 10 to 20 cents per litre or more until issues are worked out.”

DeHaan adds even more refiners could see disruption as Tropical Storm Ian nears the U.S. coast.

“There remain many factors driving prices both up and down across the country.”
