New Westminster voters have elected a new mayor, after Jonathan X. Cote announced he would not be seeking another term.
Patrick Johnstone has been elected, being chosen over Ken Armstrong and Chuck Puchmayr.
Johnstone was a two-time New West councillor before being elected mayor.
A professional geoscientist and community volunteer, Johnstone won on a platform that includes wanting to build more diverse housing options, continue to hit climate goals and make sure the city’s capital plan gets seen through.
He has served in various roles, including Vice President of the Lower Mainland Local Government Association, and has served as Chair of the Community Energy Association.
Former mayor Cote has been a political veteran in the city, having served three terms on the New West city council and leading Translink’s Mayors’ Council. He announced early this year that he would not be running again, telling voters that it was “time to take on my next adventure.”
In addition to a new mayor, voters in New West have elected six councillors: Ruby Campbell, Jaimie McEvoy, Tasha Henderson, Nadine Nakagawa, Paul Minhas, and Daniel Fontaine.
The seven school trustees elected are Maya Russell, Marc Andres, Danielle Connelly, Dee Beattie, Cheryl Sluis, Gurveen Dhaliwal, and Elliott Slinn.
