The huge barge that weighed nearly 1.4-million kilograms when it washed up on a Vancouver beach last November could be gone by the end of the month.

Deconstruction of the barge has been underway since August after attempts earlier in the year failed to pull it off the rocks near Sunset beach.

Vancouver Pile Driving — which is managing the work to cut the barge apart and remove the pieces — estimated it would take 12 to 15 weeks to finish the job, and yesterday marked the start of week 14.

The company says once the last pieces of the barge are gone, work will be done to restore the area where the barge has rested high on the rocks since it washed ashore last November 15th during a fierce storm and king tide.

It affectionately become known as “Barge on the Beach,” and even spurred a renaming of the beach in which it washed ashore — “Barge Chilling Beach.”

During the king tide, there were concerns it would hit the Burrard Bridge before it washed up high on the sand and rocks near Sunset Beach, defeating all efforts to drag it free.
