Mounties in Prince Rupert say a 44-year-old man is believed to have shot and killed a 52-year-old woman at a local mall Monday morning before attempting to take his own life, in an incident that sparked a lockdown of the area.
The RCMP says officers were called to the Ocean Centre Mall just after 8:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire and fears of an active shooter. Police say it was an “isolated incident” between two people who knew each other.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man is in the hospital in critical condition, police say.
“We know the traumatic impact this incident will have on many people and we have supports in place to assist those that may need help,” said Staff-Sgt. Dave Uppal with Prince Rupert RCMP.
RCMP are looking for potential witnesses to come forward, and are also appealing for dashcam or other video recordings from around the mall between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday.
B.C. Premier David Eby addressed the matter Monday during a news conference about housing measures.
He called the reports “incredibly troubling,” adding “our thoughts and, certainly, our hearts go out to everybody affected by that incident.”
The mall has been closed to the public until further notice and police ask people to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
