Vancouver radio host Drex suffers heart attack

By CityNews Staff

A big voice will be missing off the Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley airwaves for a little while, as JACK FM host Drex recovers from a heart attack.

The broadcaster took to social media on Friday, saying he had suffered a heart attack but that he was “doing ok.”

“Right after dinner I started feeling unwell. I went to bed to try and rest but I was too much,” he detailed in a post. “I was taken to hospital where I received a Stent, I had a 100% blockage.”

Drex goes on to say that the incident was “scary, sobering, and super messed up to experience alone.”

Morning show co-host Lena Shulman tells CityNews the 43-year-old is in good spirits.

“This is something that he’s going to have to watch now for the rest of his life,” she explained, adding he has also received an additional stent.

“It’s something that runs in the family, it’s something that now is going to change his life forever. There’s obviously lifestyle changes involved but also medications and things like that. He was just shaken.”

She says he’s eager to get back in the studio but knows he has to follow doctor’s orders for now.

“I did visit him yesterday in the hospital. He is walking around, he is in good spirits and he said to me ‘I don’t know how I feel about being off the show!’ I said, ‘Priorities, friend, priorities.’ So he will be back, don’t you worry,” Shulman added.

According to the federal government, 2017-2018 data shows that about one in 12 Canadian adults 20 years and over live with diagnosed heart disease.

It notes heart disease affects men and women differently, adding men are twice as likely to suffer a heart attack than women.

Signs of a heart attack can vary. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada recommends you call 9-1-1 if you are feeling any of the signs of a heart attack.
