Coquihalla reopens after ‘active and unfolding police incident’

The Coquihalla Highway has reopened between Hope and Merritt after the RCMP closed it for a time due to “an unfolding police incident.”

The RCMP says the incident has concluded after a couple of hours.

“The investigation into the need for the closure remains active and ongoing, and the public can anticipate seeing a marked increase in police vehicles in the area,” said Sgt. Chris Manseau.

The RCMP said earlier in the day a “large number of policing resources” were sent to the Juliet Bridge area, located south of Merritt by the Coquihalla Summit. People were asked to stay away and not post police locations online.

Mounties say there won’t be further information released Wednesday as to what led to the closure, saying a more “fulsome” update can be expected Thursday.

The Merritt RCMP is asking for any witnesses or anyone who was near the area of Juliet Bridge, just south of Merritt near the Coquihalla summit between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on November 23 with dash-camera video and have not yet spoken to police, please call the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
