A strong Pacific system hitting B.C. has prompted numerous weather alerts from Environment and Climate Change Canada for wintery and windy conditions.
There are 18 alerts issued for mountain highways all over the province.
The Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) from Hope to Merritt, as well as from Merritt to Kamloops is under a winter storm warning. Up to 25 cm of snow is expected on Saturday evening, with winds putting visibility at risk, ECCC says.

On Highway 3, areas from Hope to Princeton, and Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass are also under winter storm warnings with heavy, blowing snow also expected.
The Trans-Canada Highway, or Highway 1, is under a winter storm warning from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass near the Alberta border.
Winter tires or chains are required by law on all these routes or you could be turned around or fined, with penalties starting at $121.
Metro Vancouver is also under a special weather statement from ECCC, as strong winds are expected Saturday evening. The agency says a Pacific cold front will cause gusts of up to 80 km/h across the region.
“The winds are strong enough to cause some power outages over the region,” ECCC said. “Winds will ease overnight after the front moves out of the region.”

All of this is ahead of what’s expected to be a wintery week for the region. Snowfall is expected to hit the Lower Mainland by mid-week, potentially bringing over five centimetres of accumulation.
