Pets mean a lot to us, but for people without houses or who are struggling financially, it can be hard to feed them. Sarah Chew reports Vancouver pet food banks are having trouble keeping up with demand.

There’s an increased demand for donations of pet food at local food banks in British Columbia, according to the BC SPCA.

The agency says dry and wet cat food and cat litter are some of the more urgent supplies needed.

Outreach specialist with the BC SPCA, Diane Waters, says donations are “spreading thin” despite increased investment into services.

“Many pet guardians are struggling right now, especially those on a fixed income, and we want to make sure they can provide their pets with everything they need,” she explained.

“The increase in demand is definitely having an impact. We are having supply issues across the board and are in desperate need of donations of food and other pet supplies.”

Apart from partnering with various organizations to provide pet food supply, the BC SPCA also gives financial help for owners who need to spay or neuter their furry friends.

“Our goal in all of our outreach services is to help provide guardians the support they need so pets can stay with their loving families,” said Waters.

The BC SPCA says two anonymous donors are triple matching donations up to $45,000 due to increased demand for outreach services.

The agency says it’s also in need of volunteers to help with pet food supply collection and distribution in the province.
