New Westminster police warns of several sextortion scams

The New Westminster police are warning people of sexual exploitation scams after receiving several reports.

Police say scammers engage with individuals in intimate encounters online, asking to exchange photos. Scammers then blackmail and intimidate the individuals to give them more sexual content or money, in exchange for not publishing explicit photos, videos, or messages.

In a statement, Sgt. Justin Thomson says sextortion cases are often unreported because of their sensitive nature. Victims are also often too embarrassed to file a report.

“Youth may also be hesitant to seek adult assistance and will often comply with threats to try and manage the situation on their own,” he said.

Police encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about the potential risk of using technology for sexual experimentation, including blocking and deleting unsolicited messages from online strangers and being careful about who they’re adding on social media.

For anyone currently in this sensitive situation, police say, all communication should be stopped immediately. Deactivate but do not delete the account used to communicate with the scammer. Individuals should also never pay or send additional photos. If money has been sent, officers say to check if payment has been collected and quickly cancel any payment sent.

Police say it’s also essential to keep a copy of your conversation. Keep information such as usernames and social media account information, including any photos or videos sent.

Youth who are being sextorted should ask a parent or guardian for help.

Parents and guardians can get more resources regarding sextortion at www.cybertip.ca. Youth can also call the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) distress line at 403-327-7905 or toll-free 1-888-787-2880, and also through the Kids Help Line at 1-800-668-6868.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual exploitation can report it to the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411 or call 911 in an emergency.
