A holiday headache turned into a blessing when a misfortune brought two strangers together, and started the new year as friends.

Shawn Ewing lost her wallet a day before New Year’s Eve while she was running errands with her wife and new puppy.
“I put my wallet on top of the car because I was going to do something else, ran back to the car, and completely forgot about my wallet on top of the car,” she said.

Ewing drove off, forgetting about her wallet until she got to the bank and realized her mistake. She drove back to her house, looked for the wallet everywhere, and drove through the route she’d been on.

“We were getting ready to cancel cards.”

Out of nowhere, a stanger walked up her driveway, holding her wallet. Fawad Entezar, a refugee from Afghanistan, was on his way to the gym when he saw the wallet.

“There was a wallet on the street and cars were passing but when I saw the driver’s license there was an address on there,” he said.

Entezar typed in the address on his Google Maps. He walked in the pouring rain to return the wallet to its owner.

“I know how it feels when you lose something,” he said.

Entezar came to Canada alone to escape the threats of the Taliban in Afghanistan. He says it has been lonely at times but now, he has made a new friend in Ewing.

Entezar’s act of kindness, one from a stranger, who went above and beyond, moved Ewing. She says it gave her a sense of relief.

“Made my week, made my day, and made my year,” Ewing said. “I think about it and it makes me a little emotional because what it did do – made me restore my faith in humanity- and it opened my eyes to realize that we have people that come to this country that want to do good.”

Entezar is looking forward to start his career as a model in Vancouver in the new year. Ewing says she wants to help him get established in the city.

“This is someone who is going to do great things for the country and I am very happy to support that.”
