5-year-old injured after being hit by vehicle on Vancouver Island

A young boy has been hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle in Courtenay on Tuesday morning.

Comox Valley RCMP says just after 8:30 a.m., officers responded to a collision on Woods Avenue, near 4th Street.

Officers blocked off the street while first responders tended to the five-year-old boy and spoke with witnesses, as well as the driver.

The boy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

Cst. Monika Terragni says the driver has cooperated with the investigation, and it is not believed speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.

“This is an unfortunate reminder for both pedestrians and drivers to be extra careful during the busy times children are headed to and from school,” she said.

The incident came on the first day kids in B.C. returned to school after the holiday break.
