With Lunar New Year celebrations right around the corner, the Vancouver Canucks are set to break-in a new warm-up jersey.
Designed with the Year of the Rabbit in mind, the team is set to wear the jerseys on Tuesday ahead of their game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
The jerseys are done in the style of the iconic flying skate with a stylized rabbit on top.
“This Lunar New Year is the Year of the Rabbit which symbolizes hope, peace and longevity in accordance with the Chinese zodiac,” the Canucks say in a release.
The jerseys, designed by award-winning artist Trevor Lai, are meant to symbolize “elements of speed, power, and good fortune.”
“The jerseys showcase a traditional Ruyi pattern (an ancient Chinese symbol) woven throughout the sweater and acting as a protective circle of good fortune. A special shoulder patch features The Lions mountain range, from BC’s North Shore, encased in a traditional Chinese lantern symbolizing the Canucks shining light on the community and everyone in it,” the team added.
Fans can buy the jerseys for $750 online, or at the game.
Player-worn jerseys will also be available for auction on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. until the start of the second period on game day.
Additional Lunar New Year merchandise will also be available, with some of the proceeds form the merchandise will set to be donated to two Vancouver organizations, Elimin8hate and the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, to support anti-racism curriculum in education and to promote inclusivity.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim — the city’s first Chinese-Canadian mayor — will take part in the ceremonial puck drop at the Jan. 24 game.
