U.S. newscast mispronounces ‘Canucks’, ‘Boudreau’; internet reacts

The Vancouver Canucks’ recent coaching changeup is making some headlines online for an unexpected reason.

That news made the cut for a broadcast by FOX 5 in Washington D.C., where Boudreau was once the head coach of the Washington Capitals.

However, when the story was read, fans pointed out some key mispronunciations made.

In a clip of the story that has been making rounds online, the newscaster is heard calling the former Vancouver coach Bruce “Bow-dreau,” the Canucks the “Can-nukes” and new bench boss Rick Tocchet’s name, “Tew-ket.”

A follow-up clip posted an hour later from the same news channel saw the newscaster correct her pronunciation of Boudreau’s name, but not the pronunciations of the Canucks, and Tocchet’s.

Needless to say, Canucks fans had a field day with the announcing gaffes.

One person’s response to the video said, “We are all Cah-nooks.”

“Who Ca-new we’ve been mispronouncing Canucks all this time?” posted another person.

Others took aim at the mispronunciation suggesting Vancouver was home to nuclear weapons. “Vancouver is a Nuke-free zone,” a Twitter user wrote.

In that same vein, another person joked, “In her defense, the Canucks are bombing.”

And others got more creative, with one writing “It’s the start of a new era; Rick Tookoot’s Canooks.”

Boudreau was fired as head coach of the Canucks on Sunday after spending just over a year in the role. Tocchet now becomes the third coach the Canucks have had in the past three years.
