Parts of southern B.C. are still in for some winter weather, despite spring being just around the corner.
A snowfall warning has been issued for the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt, with up to 20 centimetres expected between Sunday and Tuesday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says the weather is likely to create “challenging driving conditions,” between what accumulates on the ground and the changes between snow and rain, back to snow.
It also adds snow levels will “fall to valley bottom in the wake of the cold front” Tuesday, adding “roads may become slippery.”
“As the warm front approaches, snow levels will rise to near 1,000 metres,” the agency says starting Sunday. “Snow will change to rain below this elevation, but will remain as snow and accumulate above this elevation.”
As the weather system moves through, ECCC says “snow will briefly intensify” Monday night, ahead of the cold front early Tuesday morning. This may create conditions for rain or snow to freeze on surfaces.
In addition to slippery roads, drivers are reminded that visibility may also be reduced at times due to the snow.
Winter or other accepted snow tires are required on B.C.’s out of town highways until April 30.
