BC Hydro says it is decommissioning two of its remaining electrical vaults in Vancouver out of caution.
The company says the two vaults have been in operation for a “long period of time” and consider both vaults “low risk.” One vault is located in the West End while the other is in Chinatown.
On Feb 24, those near Burrard and West Hastings were shaken by a sudden blast that left two people injured. The utility company says it is still undergoing a complex investigation and won’t have answers until at least the end of April.
“We want to assure the public this was a rare occurrence and we place a high priority on ensuring our electrical equipment continues to be safe and reliable. In fact, we regularly inspect and routinely maintain our equipment and infrastructure throughout B.C.” the company said in an email to CityNews.

B.C. Hydro says it’s working with businesses that were affected by the blast.
“We have reached out to the affected businesses to discuss the process for how claims can be submitted. And, we’re committed to working with these businesses or their insurance companies during the claims process.”
The West End vault will be decommissioned over the weekend while the one in Chinatown will be done by the end of the month. The company says it has been in touch with customers in both neighbourhoods as the work could cause planned power outages.
