Surrey movie theatre pepper sprayed

Mounties in Surrey are looking for whoever walked into a theatre and unleashed pepper spray on movie-goers over the weekend.

The RCMP says it happened at the Landmark Cinemas in Guildford Saturday just after 5:30 p.m.

According to a release, a suspect walked into a theatre, sprayed viewers — including children — and then ran away.

About 20 to 30 people were sprayed. No one was seriously hurt, with Mounties adding everyone affected was “treated on scene.”

It’s unclear what provoked the incident.

“Our General Investigation Unit is actively working to identify the suspect, and while the motive for this incident is not yet known, this was a disturbing assault on movie theatre patrons, that will be fully investigated by police,” said Surrey RCMP Corp. Vanessa Munn.

“We are aware of two other recent similar incidents in other provinces and will be liaising with the investigative agencies.”

The RCMP is looking to speak with anyone who was in the theatre at the time of the pepper spraying and who has not yet spoken with investigators.

Mounties are also looking for any dashcam footage from the area around the theatre taken between 5:20 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. Saturday, March 25.
