Vancouver honours John Garrett

The City of Vancouver is paying tribute to a legendary former Vancouver Canucks broadcaster.

Mayor Ken Sim says the city has proclaimed May 10 John Garrett Day in Vancouver.

“Congratulations on a very successful career,” Sim said, thanking the colour commentator for his “many years as both a player and broadcaster.”

Garrett announced in March that this would be his last season calling Canucks games alongside his friend and play-by-play partner John Shorthouse.

Nicknamed ‘Cheech,’ Garrett has held his position since 2002. In addition to his work behind the mic, Garrett had stints with the Hartford Whalers and Quebec Nordiques before being acquired by the Canucks in 1983, spending three seasons in net for the team.

Garrett left the league in 1985 and shifted his talents to broadcasting, working as a colour commentator on Hockey Night in Canada. He has also worked with the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers.
