Police in Vancouver say dozens of people were arrested as part of a recent crackdown on shoplifting.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says the two-week project comes after another operation in February and March that saw more than 200 people arrested.

“Our officers went undercover to detect and arrest the thieves targeting retailers in Vancouver,” Const. Tania Visintin said.

“Violence and retail crime is still a major concern in Vancouver. Someone going to work to earn a living should not have to be subjected to this type of violence.”

During the project, police say a dozen weapons were seized and more than $35,500 in stolen merchandise was recovered.

Out of the 138 arrested, police say 14 were repeat offenders.

“We’ll keep up pressure until staff and shoppers feel safe again, and to make sure offenders are held accountable,” she added.
