Abbotsford dentist admits to unprofessional conduct with staff member

A dentist in Abbotsford who was investigated by the regulatory body was ordered to pay a fine and agreed to an ethics course after he admitted to engaging in “improper touching of a female staff member without her consent.”

The B.C. College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP) said in a notice on Dec. 1, 2023, that Dr. Sukrit Grewal “signed a consent agreement” with the regulator and “consented to a six-month suspension,” which he served from May 19 to Nov. 19, 2023.

Grewal, who had been barred from seeing patients pending an investigation, was under review for three separate complaints between April and July 2022. The complaints alleged “professional and ethical misconduct … of a sexual nature towards female staff at dental clinics where he practiced at the time.”

Over the course of the investigation, the BCCOHP says additional complaints were received, including claims that the dentist had “failed to comply” with conditions in place during the probe.

Since, the BCCOHP says Grewal has admitted that he “engaged in improper touching of a female staff member,” and has acknowledged that “it is unprofessional conduct to … engage in sexually charged and flirtatious communications with staff, and … touch staff or patients without their consent, and in particular, when such touching has, or may be perceived as having, a sexual intent.”

“Dr. Grewal acknowledges the importance of strict adherence to undertakings made to BCCOHP,” the BCCOHP said in its publication notice.

The regulatory body says Grewal agreed to: complete an Ethics and Boundaries Course before returning to practice; pay the BCCOHP $2,000; and “have the psychiatrist who is treating him in satisfaction of the requirements of the separate criminal proceeding provide a report directly to BCCOHP following that treatment.”

Grewal practiced pediatric dentistry in Abbotsford.
