BC Ferries changing Metro Vancouver-Nanaimo routes

In an effort to reduce traffic at the Horseshoe Bay terminal, BC Ferries will be changing up some of its routes between Metro Vancouver and Nanaimo this summer.

The company announced Tuesday that one vessel will be moved from the Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay route to the Tsawwassen to Duke Point route. According to a statement, the change is made to divert traffic from the terminal in West Vancouver, where vehicles can “unsafely” back onto Highway 99.

To encourage people to take the new route, BC Ferries says it will be offering lower fares for travellers leaving from Tsawwassen to Duke Point, along with discounts for overheight vehicles and commercial vehicles. Those discounts will begin on July 5.

There will still be two boats that will service the Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay route.

Those looking to travel from the mainland to Nanaimo are asked to book their spot in advance, with BC Ferries saying sailing waits will be less likely when departing from Tsawwassen.
