20 Coquitlam trees vandalized over weekend, $13,000 to replace

The City of Coquitlam says more than 20 young saplings were vandalized at five sites throughout the city over the weekend.
The city says the vandals targeted the young trees at Leigh Park, Town Centre Park, Princeton Park, Parkway Boulevard, and Panorama Drive.
The cost to replace the trees will hit the city’s back pocket, with the city estimating it will cost around $13,000.
“The damaged trees will be removed shortly and will be replaced in the fall of 2023, when the weather is optimal for young trees to develop,” the city said on social media.
However, that cost could rise, it says, as more trees are discovered.
In a photo posted online, one young tree has been snapped in half, and laying down on the sidewalk.
It’s now asking for you to be on the look out for additional damaged trees, and to report them to its Parks Customer Service at 604-927-6300 or trees@coquitlam.ca.
It’s also asking for anyone with information about the vandalism, or folks who may have footage of the incidents, to call the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550, and quote file number 23-14581.
