Campfire ban lifted for Lower Mainland, parts of Coastal fire Centre

Campers across the Lower Mainland will soon be able to sit around the campfire again, as a ban has been lifted for the parts of the Coastal Fire Centre.

In a tweet, the BC Wildfire Service says campfires are once again allowed in the Sea to Sky Resource District, Sunshine Coast Resource District, Chilliwack Resource District, and “the portion of the Central Coast Regional District that falls within the North Island Central Coast Resource District.”

The change is effective June 21 at 12 p.m.

Initially placed on June 8, the ban is still in place for all of Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, and most of the Gulf Islands.

A map from the BC Wildfire Service shows which areas are seeing fire bans in the Coastal Fire Centre.

Category 2 and 3 fires are still prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, meaning fireworks, sky lanterns, and burn barrels are banned.

The BC Wildfire Service says it made the change because of recent cooler conditions and rainfall, although it warns that fire bans may have to be reinstated if conditions change.
