Surrey RCMP traffic stop suspect runs into woods, search for driver continues

Mounties in Surrey are searching for a man who is said to have run away from police while they were trying to make a traffic stop Tuesday night.

Const. Parm Kahlon says officers initiated the stop at King George Boulevard and Highway 10 at around 9:45 p.m. Police say the driver then fled from the scene and was then found on Highway 99, just south of the Serpentine River overpass.

The RCMP tells CityNews the driver of the Mercedes Benz CLS 550 ran into the woods. Despite a search of the area by the Surrey Gang Enforcement Team, the Integrated Police Dog Service, and other agencies, police say the man was not found.

The incident shut Highway 99 in both directions in the area of the park for several hours. It reopened early Wednesday morning.

Mounties say they have identified the driver in question as a 44-year-old Langley man, adding a warrant is being sought for his arrest as “there was evidence of drug-related trafficking located.”

Investigators believe this was an “isolated incident” and that there is no risk to the public.

The Surrey RCMP is asking anyone who was in the area or who may have information or dash cam footage from the area to contact investigators at 604-599-0502.
