YVR urges travellers to plan ahead this summer

People travelling through Vancouver International Airport (YVR) are being told to plan ahead this summer, and that means more than just arriving early.

YVR Communications Manager Alyssa Smith says it’s already been a busy start to the season.

“We know we are already upwards of 77,000-78,000 passengers per day, which is busy for us, certainly, but what we expect through the summer period,” she explained.

Planning ahead now means more than just making sure your passport is up to date and that you’ve checked in with your airline. Make sure that you’re really thinking about what time you’re flying, when you’re supposed to be arriving, and what would that mean for you if you were to see a cancellation or a delay. There’s definitely mechanisms for you in place if you do experience something like that to make sure that you are getting back what you need to. But really just plan ahead with your travels this summer.”

The reminder from the airport comes after another wave of delays were reported Tuesday. That followed several other days plagued by disruptions in recent weeks.

In the latest series of delays, YVR says around 30 per cent of flights were held back Tuesday. Once again, weather conditions and the nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers were blamed for the disruptions.

Things were looking better Wednesday, with about 13 per cent of flights delayed.

“Flight delays happen from time to time. We don’t go usually one day without any sort of delay, it’s usually in that seven to nine per cent range is about what you would see on any typical day, so 13 per cent is sort of within that range,” Smith said.

YVR says Thursday and Sunday are expected to be the busiest travel days, with an average 533,557 passengers expected by the end of the week.
