Nanaimo hospital left with no doctors over August long weekend: BC United

More proof of B.C.’s hurting healthcare system Friday as the province’s official opposition party says patients at Nanaimo General Hospital were told there were no doctors on site at the regional hospital over the August long weekend.

BC United, formerly known as the BC Liberal Party, says in a statement says some patients were left stunned when they were given letters saying, “You are admitted to hospital but without a physician overseeing your ongoing care.”

The party’s health critic is using the lack of doctors to highlight the dangerous state of healthcare in B.C.

“We know that lives have already been lost as a result of B.C.’s health care crisis, and every day government fails to address it, more people are put at risk,” said BC United Shadow Minister for Health Shirley Bond.

“British Columbians deserve so much better.”

According to BC United, the hospital recently lost two doctors, and Nanaimo is just the most recent B.C. hospital to see severe staffing issues, with Oliver, Merritt, and Saanich also dealing with shortages.
