Mission prison unit under lockdown for search

A medium security unit of a prison in Mission has been under lockdown for days while staff search the facility.

According to a media release from Correction Service Canada, the lockdown at Mission Institution was put in place on Aug. 15 to allow an “exceptional search.”

“The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates,” the release stated.

While the lockdown is in place, visits are suspended. Normal operations will resume “as soon as it is considered safe to do so.”

The subject of the search has not been identified. However, the government agency says it is “committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions.”

“CSC works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions,” it stated.

The prison declined CityNews’ request for more information.
