City of Surrey to remove ‘derelict’ boats from Nicomekl River

The City of Surrey says it will work alongside Transport Canada in September to remove some “derelict” boats from the Nicomekl River.
The Nicomekl River runs adjacent to a popular walking trail in South Surrey — a walking trail where locals have become no stranger to seeing these boats daily.

The city explains boats have been moored illegally on the narrow section of the river rather than booking moorage at one of the multiple marinas at the lower end of the Nicomekl.
It says these boats have been “dumping raw sewage and garbage into the water” and “gathering salvaged debris, creating hazards for other boaters.”
Mayor Brenda Locke says she doesn’t see any reason these boats should be illegally moored, and adds the city will work to clean up that section of the river.
“The Nicomekl is for all to use and is not a place for boat owners who illegally dock their boats with a complete disregard to the environment and the safety of others,” she said.
