The City of Vancouver is showing off what it calls “Canada’s first-ever zero carbon firehall” — the futuristic-looking building can be found in the city’s Fraserview neighbourhood.

The city says Firehall 17, located at 7070 Knight Street, has already earned several green building certifications — including LEED Gold certification and Net Zero Energy as defined by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The city notes it is “on track” to earn a Passive House certification as well.

Outside of its “green” qualities and being Vancouver’s second biggest firehall, the building is also designed to be a post-disaster communications hub — as it contains the equipment needed to keep the community connected if something like a major earthquake hits.
Vancouver Fire Rescue Services Chief Karen Fry says the building will ensure the City of Vancouver is “resilient to potential disasters.”
“The new Firehall 17 is part of Vancouver Fire Rescue Services long-term fire hall plan and will meet service needs for the next few decades,” she said.
Mayor Ken Sim attended the facility on Wednesday for its opening day and says it demonstrates that near-zero-emissions buildings can become the new normal.
“The new Firehall 17 is a leading example of the City of Vancouver’s innovative approach to meeting climate commitments while investing in our city and providing the services Vancouverites depend on. It is a demonstration we can make near zero-emissions buildings the new normal, while also helping to reduce energy and water consumption costs,” he said.
