RCMP asks witnesses to stranger assault in Coquitlam to come forward

The RCMP is looking for additional witnesses and possible video after what investigators are describing as a “brazen stranger assault” in Coquitlam.

Mounties say they received reports that a woman was being assaulted near Hoy Creek Trail, in the area of Glen Drive and Johnson Street, around 7:45 p.m. Thursday.

Callers reported that multiple people were intervening, and that the suspect ran away but was “followed by witnesses.”

Officers were able to find and arrest the suspect, who was reportedly hiding in a nearby store.

According to police, the victim said the man, who she didn’t know grabbed her while she was walking. The woman suffered minor physical injuries and police say she fought back before witnesses stepped in.

The suspect remains in custody until his next court appearance. Investigators say the man “is known to police” but have not elaborated.

“We want to commend the victim who fought back against her attacker and the witnesses who came to her aid. The public’s quick response to this incident helped police locate the suspect swiftly and most likely prevented further injuries to the victim,” said Superintendent Keith Bramhill.

“These types of reports are very concerning for the community and our investigators. We want to reassure the public that maintaining safety is our top priority.”

The Coquitlam RCMP is asking anyone who may have seen what happened and who has not yet spoken to police to contact investigators at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2023-24214. Anyone with surveillance, dash-cam, or cellphone video of the incident is also asked to reach out.
