House of Commons holds moment of silence for fallen Ridge Meadows RCMP officer

Just days after a Ridge Meadows RCMP officer was killed in the line of duty in Coquitlam, the House of Commons took a moment to remember the fallen Mountie with a minute of silence.
On Friday, Const. Rick O’Brien and other members of the RCMP were searching a home in the Tri-Cities when he and two other officers were hurt. O’Brien succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Speaking from Ottawa Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once again offered condolences as he and B.C. Premier David Eby met at the start of a two-day sit down to discuss a range of issues.

The premier thanked Trudeau and others for their support over the days that followed O’Brien’s death.
“Let me say thank you for your condolences about the loss and injury of RCMP officers in our province. Today is the memorial of fallen officers and Const. Shaelyn Yang as well, who was murdered in Burnaby. It’s been an unbelievably terrible year for losing law enforcement officers. We’re just so grateful for them, for putting themselves on the line and our thoughts (are with) their families at the incredibly difficult time and on a challenging day,” Eby said.
Burnaby RCMP officer Const. Shaelyn Yang was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 18, 2022. Yang was fatally stabbed during an altercation after she was called to assist a local parks employee who was responding to reports of a man in a tent at Broadview Park. She was 31 at the time of her death.
Meanwhile, the two officers who sustained injuries alongside O’Brien on Friday have since been released from hospital. The suspect in the incident was shot by police, the RCMP said last week.
Born in Ottawa, O’Brien was 51 years old at the time of his death. He had just celebrated seven years with the force, with the RCMP noting he had spent his entire time with the Ridge Meadows detachment.
