Lions Gate Bridge reopens in both directions

The Lions Gate Bridge reopened in both directions Monday afternoon after some “airborne debris” forced a brief closure earlier in the day.

The bridge was closed just after 1 p.m. after a large piece of metal had become wrapped around a light fixture at the south end of the bridge.

Images of crews working to dislodge the piece of metal show one person in a bucket truck trying to pry the sheet free, with DriveBC saying they were “creating a new use for a shovel” to get the work done.

“The ministry is aware of the sheet metal that became lodged on the Lions Gate Bridge’s overhead gantry earlier today,” the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said in a statement to CityNews.

“Crews have safely removed the metal and are cleaning up the site.”

The bridge reopened just before 2 p.m.
