Condolences pile up for slain Ridge Meadows RCMP officer

Flowers, candles, and cards of condolence are piling up outside the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment in memory of a Mountie killed in Coquitlam on Friday.

The messages of love surround a photo of Const. Frederick O’Brien on a table draped in RCMP red and insignia.

Inside the detachment, a book of condolences is available for people to share a few words in his memory.

O’Brien was shot and killed while executing a search warrant on Friday morning. Two other officers were injured, along with the suspect.

One person at the growing memorial tells CityNews Monday the last gift is “remembrance.”

“It’s important for the community to come together and support the men and women who are out there every day, who go to work every day, don’t know if they’re coming home, and who keep us safe,” she said.

Maple Ridge Mayor Don Ruimy is among those offering their thoughts and condolences.

“The heartbreak of what has happened to Constable Rik O’Brien, a seven-year veteran of the force. Well-loved, a great sense of humour,” he said.

A fundraiser by the National Police Federation was started Saturday.

The initial $10,000 goal was to assist O’Brien’s family. It has since surpassed $100,000.

A 25-year-old Coquitlam man has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to O’Brien’s death, along with two counts of attempted murder.
