Maple Ridge fire crews called out to assisted living facility

Crews made short work of a fire at a Maple Ridge assisted living facility on Burnett Street near Lougheed Highway Saturday.

Assistant fire chief Gary Porter says the fire started in a suite on the third floor and was extinguished quickly.

“It started amongst bedding on the bed,” Porter told CityNews. “(We) believe it’s attributed to smoking materials, but it’s not confirmed at this stage.”

Residents of the building had to be evacuated.

He adds this isn’t the first time firefighters have been called out to the facility.

“We’ve had a number of incidents to this building,” he said. “It’s the second time we’ve been to this suite for a fire.”

Porter says there were no injuries, but one person was displaced.
