Mounties in Nanaimo say they’re investigating a series of vandalisms and thefts of batteries from railway control boxes.
The Nanaimo RCMP says these thefts have been an ongoing issue since August, with a total of five cases happening in the Nanaimo area since then.
“The thefts are occurring late at night, and in most cases, there are no witnesses or CCTV in the area to assist with the investigation,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien.
These thefts aren’t just limited to Nanaimo either, as police explain they come as part of an “island-wide series of thefts” from Langford to the Comox Valley.
Police have estimated that repair and replacement costs for these batteries is in the range of $800,000.
Mounties ask anyone with any information related to these thefts to call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
