John Horgan appointed as next Canadian ambassador to Germany

Nearly a year after he officially stopped being the premier of B.C., John Horgan has a new job — this time in Germany.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced Horgan has been appointed the country’s next Canadian ambassador.

Trudeau says Horgan has a “proven track record” when it comes to public service, noting the 64-year-old’s time as premier through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am confident that he will continue to serve Canada well and help advance our two countries’ common interests in this new role, including our shared commitment to building a clean future with good middle-class jobs and a strong economy that benefits everyone,” Trudeau said of the former B.C. MLA.

Horgan was the longest-serving NDP premier in B.C.’s history.

A two-time cancer survivor, Horgan announced he was stepping down as premier in the summer of 2022. His last day was Nov. 17, 2022.

He served as the MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca from 2005 until March of this year.
