Vancouver man wins gold in breaking at Pan-Am Games

A Vancouver man has won the gold medal for men’s breaking, also known as breakdancing, at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile on Saturday.

Philip Kim, who goes by B-Boy Phil Wizard, defeated the U.S.’s B-Boy Jeffro to become the first Pan Am Games gold medalist in men’s breaking and securing a quota spot to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, according to Team Canada’s website.

Kim and paddler Katie Vincent, who was a gold medalist in canoe sprint, were named Canada’s flag-bearers for Sunday’s closing ceremonies.

Canada’s team of almost 500 athletes wrapped up 16 days of competition Sunday finishing with events in karate, squash, bowling, and golf.

The Toronto women’s beach volleyball duo of Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes carried Canada’s flag into the opening ceremonies. They won a silver medal.
