Tree crashes down on car in Vancouver

Despite strong winds sweeping across parts of Vancouver, it remains unclear what brought a large tree down onto a car and residential road in the West Side Tuesday.

The tree fell in the area of Yew Street and West 38 Avenue some time before 1 p.m., according to a person who lives in the neighbourhood.

The Vancouver Park Board says the city’s Urban Forestry team has “certified tree risk assessors that evaluate every street tree annually to identify risks that may need to be prioritized for treatment.”

However, it adds what exactly caused the tree to topple over is still under investigation.

“The butternut walnut in question at Yew Street and West 38th Avenue did not have any concerning characteristics when last inspected,” the Park Board said in a statement.

“Many variables can influence a tree’s structural integrity including, but not limited to, weather, decay, and construction within the root zone. At this time, it is not known what exactly caused the tree to fail, however staff will examine it in detail and are currently on site removing the tree.”

The tree came down as strong winds brought down trees in several other parts of Metro Vancouver. In some areas, the wind also led to power outages.
