Petition to recall education minister can proceed, says Elections BC

Elections BC says a petition to recall Minister of Education and Surrey-Green Timbers MLA Rachna Singh can proceed.

The petition can officially launch Nov. 30 and has two months from that date to gather just under 12,000 signatures from people in Singh’s riding.

The petitioner claims in his application that B.C.’s public schools are indoctrinating children with inappropriate sexual material, which is a common argument made by people protesting the province’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, or SOGI-123, policies in schools.

According to Elections BC’s website, recall is a process to have an MLA removed from office between elections.

If the petition were to succeed, it would be the first recall petition in Elections BC history to do so. This is the 30th recall petition that Elections BC has received since 1995, but only six have been approved. Of those, five didn’t get enough signatures to succeed, and one was halted because the MLA involved resigned.
