It’s unclear what caused a wall at a construction site to crumble in Coquitlam Wednesday, but WorkSafeBC says it’s aware of the incident.
According to the agency, its members attended the scene and are “monitoring the site and remain in contact with the site supervisors.”
No further details have been provided.
The collapse happened at a construction site on Foster Avenue near North Road. Country Green Excavating confirms the collapse happened but would not provide any comment on the matter.
Video shared online shows cracks spreading in the wall, which is in a large pit. The cracks continue to grow before a large portion of the wall gives out, with debris and dirt crashing to the ground below and a large hold left exposed near some scaffolding.
No workers are seen near the wall or above it. WorkSafeBC says no injuries were reported.
The City of Coquitlam says Foster Avenue has been closed between North Road and Whiting Way “for safety reasons.”
“Emergency work is underway and crews will continue to work throughout the night. Westbound Foster Avenue traffic will be detoured,” the city explained in a social media post Thursday.
People are being asked to take alternate routes to avoid delays and to anticipate construction noise overnight.
