North Van RCMP warn concert-goers of Taylor Swift ticket scam

Police in North Vancouver are warning the public after two people were scammed while trying to buy tickets to Taylor Swift’s upcoming concerts in Vancouver.

The RCMP says the first reported incident involved a victim who responded to a Facebook Marketplace ad for tickets and then was duped out of a large sum of money.

Police say the victim transferred $1,020 for tickets and subsequently received an email with a wallet attachment, but no instructions for a Ticketmaster transfer. The suspect then apparently stopped responding to the victim.

In the second instance, police say the victim transferred a total of $1,800 for four tickets and then received the tickets via email, but without the passcode required to redeem them. Soon after the tickets were sent, the suspect reportedly also stopped responding.

Police say similar scams have recently been reported throughout the Lower Mainland and the rest of Canada.

To protect yourself from being scammed while buying tickets, police recommend avoiding sending money over person-to-person platforms, like e-transfer, buying from strangers and acting too quickly.

“As always, if it’s too good to be true, it likely is,” the RCMP state.

Const. Mansoor Sahak says anyone looking to make an in-person transaction via an online service, like Facebook Marketplace, can do so at a safe zone outside of the RCMP detachment at 147 E 14th Street in North Vancouver.
