Demonstrators hang banners around Vancouver in support of Palestine

Demonstrators hung banners in multiple locations around Vancouver Saturday in a show of support for Palestine.

Banners were unfurled over the Georgia Viaduct, the Granville Street bridge, and at the corner of Hastings and Commercial Saturday afternoon, one of the organizers of the event, Charlotte Samidoun, told CityNews.

“There were several banner drops in different places around the city to highlight and draw attention to the fact that the genocide is still taking place in Palestine,” Samidoun said.

She said the banners highlighted the demonstrators’ support for Palestinian liberation.

“We think it’s really important that Canada’s policy needs to change in terms of Palestine and that one vote in the UN is not enough when people continue to be killed in the hundreds on a daily basis, including Palestinian children,” she said.

She also noted several other events are taking place over the weekend, including an information table and vigil near the Vancouver Art Gallery and a peace rally at Coquitlam City Hall Sunday. As well, at 11 p.m. Sunday, there will be a protest and march as the New Year’s countdown begins.

“It’s part of a global campaign where there are cities around the world where people are participating in actions to call for a new year of Justice in Palestine, and people are calling it a countdown to ceasefire,” she said.
